Henry Sandman was a Canadian artist. Born in the year 1842, he pursued a painting career against the wishes of his father. In 1880 he became one of the Royal Canadian Academy’s first members. Sandman later toured France and England. In 1881 he went to Boston in order to complete portrait commissions. Sandman intended to stay in Boston for a few weeks but actually stayed for two decades when he opened a studio at the Hotel Van Rensselaer. Sandman died in the year 1910.
